Vermont liquor sales rise boosting general fund revenue
Vermont reports December liquor sales up 58.9 percent from November boosting the general fund by about 4000 dollars. Five month sales exceed last year by 10.2 percent with total alcohol spending over 13 million dollars in fiscal 1968. Despite a beer drop, 20 400 cases sold in five months. The Governor's Commission on Statewide Planning for Services backs creating a vocational rehabilitation services department as an interim step toward a department of human resources to consolidate health social welfare and related boards.

Controversial pledge resolution heads to House debate
In Montpelier UPI reports a lengthy debate looms on a House floor vote over a resolution by Rep. John Hancock demanding Education Board members pledge support to the education commissioner or resign. The measure accuses the board of coercing districts to consolidate and applying policies arbitrarily. The Democratic caucus was urged to oppose as the House Education Committee sent the bill without a recommendation.

Fire Drives Dorm Residents From Northfield School
About 60 girls evacuated a three story dormitory on the Northfield School for Girls campus when a corner room on the top floor burned. Wilson Hall residents gathered on the ground floor as the fire was found origin undetermined. Students exited in drill and were taken to the infirmary then stayed at Northfield Inn overnight. No injuries reported.
