Somerset and Glastenbury in Vermont lost municipal status on December 31 1937 after population decline. Remaining history recalls investors, kilns, and a booming but short lived regional industry.
The 1890s revival of a local railroad drew picnickers and loggers to Glastenbury and Somerset. A major 98 freshet ruined the line, leading to logging boom then decline after World War I. By the 1930s only a few residents remained yet history and hikers preserve the timber era lore.
A Letter to the Editor urges self examination as the year ends, urging readers to measure growth, moral progress, and closer ties to Christ. The writer reflects on temptation, perseverance, and the chance offered by each new year, citing Newman’s Lead Kindly Light. The piece closes with the author’s signature and address.
Bethel resident Dan Settanni argues that unimproved Route 7 sections cause accidents, pollution, and deaths. He claims builders and deferrers are morally responsible, and regulatory delays raise costs while harming justice and public safety.
A skeptical look at Alaska’s 1867 purchase from Russia and the state’s later boom cycles. The piece contrasts Eskimo and white attitudes toward land, notes Alaska’s vast yet sparsely settled landscape, and warns that enduring prosperity hinges on conserving resources rather than exhausting them. It cites John McPhee’s Coming Into the Country and reflects on government actions and future oil wealth versus current fiscal strain.
B A Shine Sr of Chester criticizes southern county road crews for delaying snow plows since the first storm of 1977 78. He supports reduced salt use to protect streams and trees but notes plows should start at lighter snow depths. He reminds readers letters require name and address and prefer 200 words or less.
