Manchester selectmen keep police and road crew wages flat
The Manchester board voted unanimously to not grant pay hikes for police and the road crew in 1976, while setting higher wages for four fulltime dispatchers at 3.20 an hour and two parttime dispatchers at 2.75. They plan to hire a fulltime mechanic if affordability permits and will add the second secretary to town payroll when federal funds expire. A town meeting brought in about 11,000 extra budget, and officials discussed revenue sharing totaling 66,506 by March. A fund was set up for Mrs. Georgia Stewart and her grandson after a house fire on Water Street. The board warned groups to petition for funding and considered items such as a chain-link fence for the town shed and a new loader. They signed a plowing agreement with Sunderland and urged Dorset to upgrade Town Highway 29 to class two. The next meeting is Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Ice age unlikely says NOAA researchers
Scientists from NOAA say a new ice age may not be developing as once predicted after reviewing satellite images from 1966 to present. They found snow and ice cover in North America unchanged, while Eurasia shows yearly fluctuations. A cooler climate could still lower crop yields and raise heating demand, affecting the farm belt. The Shaftsbury town plan hearing is postponed with a new date to be announced.
