Hoosac Tunnel offered to state to save B M
Trustees for the bankrupt Boston and Maine Railroad propose turning over the Hoosac Tunnel to the state to prevent collapse. The 4.7 mile tunnel links North Adams and Florida and was built at a cost over 21 million with 195 lives lost during its 25 years of construction. The plan also considers selling West of Greenfield tracks to Delaware and Hudson or other options to raise funds, including land sales in Montague and abatements of real estate taxes through 1994.
