Solar heat competitive with electric in new homes

Washington reports that solar heating can now compete economically with electricity for heating newly built, well insulated one family houses in New York and about a dozen other cities. The Energy Research and Development Administration notes solar heat cannot yet beat oil or natural gas and requires cheaper equipment or higher fuel prices to do so.

Vermonters Use Wood for Heating Across State

A UPI report cites a $12,000 study by the Vermont State Energy Office showing 54 percent of homes use wood at least as a secondary heat source, with less than seven percent using wood as primary heat and two percent with wood furnaces. Rutland County leads in share. Bennington and Windham counties trail. The Mitre Corporation prepared the study, amid broader solar energy discussions nationwide.

Carter eyes Curtis for DNC chair amid ethics code plan

President elect Jimmy Carter meets with former Maine Governor Kenneth Curtis as a potential chairman candidate for the Democratic National Committee. Italian researchers report in New York that the Ebla discovery in northern Syria reveals a 4400 year old urban kingdom rivaling Mesopotamia and Egypt. Beech Street School renovation plan gets board ok

Bennington School District directors unanimously backed Supt Sleeman’s plan to repair Beech Street School with about 10000 from existing budgets to address immediate needs. The board dropped a bond vote and discussed long term upgrades up to 50000, with no guarantee of future funding. Carolyn Reed urged a community vote, while others worried about passage prospects.
