At a Christmas summit in Ismailia the two leaders neared a Sinai withdrawal but withheld formal agreement over fears it would bypass the Palestinians. Egypt seeks a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza, while Syria calls the talks a failure.
Israeli Prime Minister Begin and Egyptian President Sadat met in Ismailia to push for a peace framework. They agreed to elevate talks to foreign minister level and form two cabinet committees to tackle unresolved issues, but failed to agree on principles of peace and a Palestinian state. Next, the committees meet January 15 with U.S. support pledged to sustain momentum.
Former CIA Director William Colby testified at a House intelligence subcommittee hearing, saying the CIA has used journalists on missions but avoided influencing U.S. press coverage. He urged against blanket bans and argued for clear regulations allowing journalist relationships. He emphasized the CIA should work abroad and not control American media content.
In Quincy Massachusetts a traffic scouting helicopter from a Boston radio station crashed into an apartment building during an early morning traffic report. Pilot Richard Banks, 50, and reporter Chip Whitmore, 29, died. Four residents were injured as a three alarm fire followed the crash. Whitmore substituted for vacationing reporter Kevin O Keefe. The helicopter appeared to be attempting an emergency landing when it nose dived into 71 A Station Street West Quincy. The aircraft was based at Beverly Airport and Banks had over 7,000 hours of flight experience.
Winter frost halts the lead pipe removal project in Bennington. Town Manager Louis C. Savelas says the federal grant remains intact and an extension is sought to resume in spring. Assistant Duane Knapp notes weather blocks completion while residents are urged to inspect service pipes for lead.
Christmas spirit meets safety as Bennington police and Rescue Squad aid Marjorie Tollison after her 1973 Plymouth skids on ice and crashes into a Mechanic Street house. She is treated at Putnam Memorial Hospital and released. The note mentions broader local notices on utilities and community programs.
