Governor Hoff told reporters Vermont faces a bright economic prospect despite gains this year not matching 1965 and 1966. He said the state mirrors the national slowdown in the first half of this year but notes Vermont’s downswing is smaller than the national trend.
Gov. George Romney of Michigan ended a Christmas visit to Vietnam expressing doubts about the significance of conventional U.S. victories. He said Communists were winning significant victories on nonconventional battle grounds during his three day trip, concluding with a helicopter hop to the next stop.
Cairo based Al Ahram reports Egypt contemplates releasing 15 ships from five nations trapped in the Suez Canal since the June 10 war. U.N. envoy Gunnar Jarring arrives in Cairo to consult with Foreign Minister Mahmoud Riad as Britain France India and Poland seek permission for their vessels to depart.
The Green Mountain Motel Association and the Tourist Bureau of the Greater Bennington Association lift opposition to the Riehle sign control bill with minor changes. Col. Robert J. Gilroy notes groups seek control of signs with secretary of state. development department to handle centers, guide books, and WATS line, funded by state. The proposal aims at state owned plazas, a Travel Information Council, and uniform directional signs to aid locations for all establishments.
South Vietnamese and U.S. forces repelled a Viet Cong battalion after a long eight hour fight near My Thuy and Cu Luy. South Vietnamese troops killed about half of a 400 strong unit while U.S. Marines and air power disrupted escaping fighters. Additional clashes north of Saigon wounded 15 Americans as raids on North Vietnam continued near the Cambodian border.
Vatican sources said Pope Paul VI may dispatch a peace mission to Hanoi in January after talks with President Johnson. The plan includes seeking humane treatment for American prisoners and relief aid for North Vietnam. Some reports link South Vietnam’s Thieu with peace overtures, while Viet Cong broadcasts dismiss such moves.
New Orleans prosecutor Jim Garrison charged President Johnson and FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover with concealing the Kennedy assassination coverup. He claimed at least 15 conspirators including right wing extremists were involved in the Dallas 1963 plot and said Oswald acted as a federal agent. Bradley of McIntire's network faced a fugitive complaint in Los Angeles as the probe widened.
UPI reports the State Department avoided direct comment on allied forces crossing into Cambodia in hot pursuit of Communists. Boiled to diplomacy, McCloskey affirmed no hostile intent while urging a peaceful settlement over use of Cambodian territory by Viet Cong and NVA units. Laos reports of a general North Vietnamese offensive were seen as seasonal fighting rather than a major shift.
A seven-year-old girl, Lynn Atchison, disappears into a Fish Creek conduit near Lewiston and is feared drowned after being swept toward the Niagara River gorge. Trooper Kenneth J. Troidl, attempting a rescue with Sgt. William F. Peterson, is swept by a broken rope 1400 feet along the icy waterway and is saved by Power Authority workers at the foot of the 200 foot drop. the trooper is hospitalized.
