Bus hits curb crashes through church window in Albany
An out of control United Traction Company bus driven by John J. Dunn, 57, mounted the curb at Hoosick and Tenth Streets in New York, smashing the Oakwood Avenue Presbyterian Church first floor bay. Dunn, shaken but uninjured, said he might have blacked out as a church sexton’s wife on the second floor fell but was not hurt. In Albany, the legislature approved the first reapportionment bill Plan A basing districts on 1960 population with Gov. Rockefeller expected to sign. Plan B would use 1962 vote totals, with Plans C and D to follow, Plan D enlarging the Senate and Assembly and using 1962 vote totals.

Minister barred from baptising condemned Louisiana prisoner
Springfield pastor Rev Gordon Watt sought an explanation after being denied permission to baptize Edgar LaBat, a New Orleans man on death row in Angola, claiming racial discrimination and planning to appeal to President Johnson and the Justice Department if unsatisfied. Louisiana officials said any legitimate spiritual adviser may baptize him, and race was not a factor, noting a Catholic chaplain visits LaBat daily. Watt also wrote to Senators Ellender and Long as the case drew national attention.
