St Nicholas Day brings warm European Christmas memories
The author recalls pre Christmas customs in Coblenz Germany where St Nicholas visits children on Dec 6. Sugar for Santa’s reindeer, cookies for good behavior, and a rute for mischief contrast with present sharing on Christmas Eve. The tale links St Nicholas to Myra, the patron saint of children, and notes Santa’s American adaptation from Dutch settlers.
