Pioneer 11 Mission Past Jupiter Marks High Speed Flash
Pioneer 11 skimmed Jupiter at 41 000 kilometers, passing south of the planet at 12 22 a.m. EST. The 570 pound craft logged 22 color photos, measured polar regions, and examined moons Callisto Ganymede and Io while hurtling toward Saturn. The mission, launched April 5 1973, aims to study the heliosphere before a Saturn encounter in 1979 as Pioneer 6 and 10 continue operating.
