Army Corps in Hardwick to prevent more floods
A four man U S Army Corps of Engineers team arrived in Hardwick to study how long it will stay to prevent floods on the Lamoille River this winter. Ice clearing operations cleared Vermont Route 15 traffic, and the highway was flooded for over a week by ice jams. Four feet of water covered the road at the peak. Governor Salmon asked the corps to remain until assured no winter flooding occurs. Walcott Street businesses reopened and nine flooded homes were reported high and dry after dynamite and heavy equipment carved 2,200 feet of channels to redirect water into the river.
