Eastern jet impounded in Georgia tax dispute
In College Park, Georgia, a DC9 Whisperjet valued at about 3.7 million dollars was impounded after officials alleged Eastern Airlines owed 55 thousand dollars in back taxes. City marshal T O Smith posted the papers on the hangar door while the jet underwent engine repairs at the Atlanta airport. Eastern called the tax clash an honest difference of opinion and said it would pursue judicial remedies. The city argues the hangar lies within College Park and is taxable, while Eastern notes the hangar is leased from Atlanta, which owns the airport.
