A jet fighter bomber struck a Tucson market shortly after takeoff, leaving four confirmed dead and up to thirty people believed inside. Fire crews recovered bodies from the charred ruins as scorched homes nearby were razed. officials cautioned some victims might never be found.

New York UPI reports James L. Marcus former New York water commissioner and Antonio Corallo linked to the Mafia were indicted by a federal grand jury on charges tied to forty thousand dollars in kickbacks on an eight hundred thirty five thousand dollar city contract.

U S Bombers Raid Hanoi and Mekong Delta Clash

U S bombers hit Hanoi for the sixth straight day while Viet Cong losses were reported on a Mekong Delta riverbank. Hanoi Radio claimed five American jets were shot down, three by MIG21s, as Moscow and East German agencies described waves of raids on Hanoi.

New York Reapportionment Faces Political Logjam in Albany

Gov Rockefeller pledged action after the Supreme Court ordered New York to redraw 41 congressional districts by March 1. The split Legislature, with Republicans controlling the Senate and Democrats the Assembly, planned to meet in January to craft a plan aiming to preserve current district lines. Assistant Atty. Gen. Zuckerman said the 1960 census would guide the new apportionment amid shifting populations. In a separate incident, a Phantom jet crashed near a shopping center at Davis-Monthan AFB, causing a fire and prompting evacuations. two airmen ejected safely and investigators began work to determine the cause.

Vermont to Seek 16.5 Million Bond for State Offices

Architect Robert Burley unveiled plans to nearly double Capitol complex space by 1972 with a 16.5 million bond program. The proposal covers three new buildings plus modernization of the State House and landscaping. Budget options include renovating the Pavilion Hotel for 60,000 square feet or building anew at 3.34 million. A 7.7 million underground addition would add 130,000 square feet with parking. Governor’s office would move to the new administration building. The plan foresees a possible phased approval, with some elements unlikely to pass before 1969. A new two-way highway behind the State House and a 1 million utilities hub are also included. Governor’s mansion was absent from the revised plan.

Johnson Heads to Australia for Holt Memorial Service

President Johnson flies to Canberra to attend the memorial for Prime Minister Harold Holt and may hold limited bilateral talks with Asian leaders. A multilateral summit is denied by the White House while top advisers for Vietnam will not accompany him. Bundy leads State Department contact. Travel includes stops at Travis Air Force Base, Honolulu, and American Samoa before Canberra, Melbourne.

Vermonters To Go to Viet For Christmas

Vermont residents will travel to Vietnam to spend Christmas with U S armed forces. The plan was approved by the State Department led by J Warren McClure Burlington Free Press publisher who will accompany the Vermonters. Governor Hoff is considering joining if funds allow. This marks the first state group to travel to Vietnam at their own expense by commercial airline.

North Vietnamese Threaten Laotian City of Saravane

VIENTIANE Laos UPI Three North Vietnamese battalions set up assault positions around the southern Laotian city of Saravane in a "serious" situation. A government communique says the Communists could attack at any time, after a prior battle scene. Saravane lies 300 miles southeast of Vientiane and sits in a plateau area with vital inland routes through Laos Cambodia and South Vietnam nearby. The police mobilized locals for defense as infiltration routes remain active.

Witnesses Heard in Damage Suit Brought by Briggs Estate

In U S District Court in Brattleboro two Bennington witnesses testified in a $200000 damage suit filed by the Estate of Clarence Briggs. Briggs was blind and killed Dec 20 1965 when a Battaglia Bros truck backed into the alley by the Banner building on Main Street. Witness Mary Louise Harrington described Briggs being struck and the driver’s backing as the jury viewed photos, while Officer James DeLong identified evidence photos. Trial opened with testimony on the accident scene layout and driver negligence allegations against Anthony Celeone of Watervliet N Y, with law officers noting no criminal backing evidence. Briggs left a widow also blind and two young children. Additional witnesses are expected. lawyers from Brattleboro Rutland and Troy represent plaintiffs and defendants.
