The Bennington College board of trustees formally reminded the faculty they oversee college operations and announced a special committee to hear faculty and student complaints. The statement also reaffirmed President Gail T. Parker will continue to carry out her duties. A five point document precedes a forthcoming update.
In Beirut sporadic gunfire jolted the two day old ceasefire as nine people died in fighting between leftist Muslims and right wing Christians. Radio Beirut lamented the failed peace and officials battled to restore order in the seafront district and downtown. The toll over two weeks tops 600 dead and 900 wounded, with total civil war deaths over 5,500. Police and troops tried to enforce calm while clashes spread to Ain Rummaneh Chiah and other areas near Damascus.
The Senate approved John Paul Stevens to the Supreme Court, restoring full strength and health to the bench. Stevens, a Chicago appeals judge aged 55, may take the oath Friday. he replaces William Douglas, who retired after ill health.
The Senate foreign relations subcommittee unanimously approved two safeguards to block covert U.S. military aid to Angola. One is a joint resolution, the other an amendment to the foreign military sales act. Both force the president to seek authorization or use existing funds, with possible congressional vetoes within 30 days.
After a heated debate the Bennington Selectmen formed a search committee to find a new town manager. Members named were George A. Sleeman Robert T. Holden Paul J. DeConinck Frederick T. Butler and Albert E. Edmundson. The vote showed splits with Corcoran and Morrissey opposing. The board plans to meet the committee next week to hash ground rules and consider interviews.
Legislation notes a Vermont special committee rejected a second operational plan for the new Transportation Agency. Chairman Sen John Boylan cast an eight to eight vote, automatic rejection. Transportation Secretary designate Arthur Ristau proposed cost cuts and job eliminations to save about 177000 by consolidating departments, but lawmakers discussed removing the Motor Vehicles Department to boost state police support.
Norman Greenberg told Bennington Selectmen he would fund four fire hydrants in his Jefferson Heights development at about 1800 dollars, to be installed by the town. The move ends a misstep when streets were accepted without hydrants, saving the town potential costs. The board also approved a 0.35 acre land swap with the Greenbergs for a water line right of way, to be publicly approved in March.
Congress moves to extend the 1975 tax cuts for six months despite President Ford's vow to veto. The House prepares final passage while the Senate is ready to send the bill to the White House. Speaker Albert says many Republicans may cross to back an override, hinging on a two-thirds vote. If vetoed, the White House could let the bill die during holiday adjournment.
President Ford told New Hampshire voters in a filmed interview he has not been forced to move right by Ronald Reagan's entry into the presidential primary. He says his political history is middle of the road and will stay that way. He notes Reagan's tax cut proposal but argues it would not cut enough of the federal burden. Ford says he intends to stay in the race through the New Hampshire primary February 24 and the following contests.
President nominee George Bush edges toward approval as Republicans urge a nonpartisan CIA. Several liberal Democrats on the Senate Armed Services Committee question whether a partisan figure can helm the agency, while Bush cites his record and independence. He notes a 1974 letter demanding Nixon resign amid Watergate tapes.
