Legion Urges National Drive Against Mental Retardation

In 1961 the President urged a comprehensive attack on mental retardation. The plan centers on research, community services, and prevention, with a focus on training more teachers, expanding prenatal care, and strengthening local education and social services for retarded children. Aviator Harry Atwood and his era of fearless flight

The article recalls Harry Atwood of the Wright era, his White House lawn takeoff in 1909, cofounding aviation paths across the United States, and later ventures in plywood planes. It notes Atwood as a colorful but impractical innovator and links his story to early aviation prophecy and danger warnings amid a modern crash context. It also mentions Cuban refugee flights from Miami funded by church groups heading to several U.S. cities.
