Government to create refuge for bald eagle on Missouri River
The National Wildlife Federation will transfer more than 1000 acres along the Missouri River near Pickstown to the federal government on December 19 to establish a National Wildlife Refuge for the bald eagle. Secretary Rogers Morton will accept the deed at a Washington ceremony. The sale was funded by a Save a Living Thing drive with 7 Eleven, which donated one cent from Slurpee sales across 5000 stores, raising over $200,000 to buy 818.7 acres and secure a conservation easement on 305 more. The area hosts up to 300 eagles in winter, with about 2,000 bald eagles remaining in the contiguous United States.
