Energy crisis dims national Yule tree
Washington reports major cutbacks in national holiday lighting due to President Nixon’s power-saving ban. The National Christmas Tree will use only 500 watts of lighting from 6 to 11 p.m., with a three-foot snowflake and eight 1,000-watt base lights. Other decorations are scaled back, including a live 42-foot Pennsylvania spruce and 57 state trees along the Ellipse.
