Bennington Eyes Rubbish to Steam Plan as Viable

A study led by Gregory Burke of the Bennington County Regional Commission investigates turning local garbage into steam for industrial heating. Preliminary data from Shaeffer & Roland suggest a $5 per ton incineration cost, excluding revenue from steam and recyclables, though Town Manager Louis Savelas notes landfill disposal runs $2.25 per ton. The plan would also need a facility to separate burnable from salable trash, with varying household separation rates prior to and after five years. The project, funded with an $18,100 grant from the New England Regional Commission, began in August and is being tested in Bennington and nearby towns.
