Cancer Virus Behavior Is Puzzle to Scientists
The study by Hare and Morgan at the University of Rochester shows polyoma viruses persist in cell colonies with most cells carrying infectious viruses in the cytoplasm and only a small fraction entering a vegetative cycle ending in cell death. Researchers aim to explain how viruses persist in fully infectious states while replicating autonomously in only some cells. The work notes interferon does not protect infected but unaffecting cells and that viral antibodies can cure infected colonies in broth.
