President Nixon, pleased by Gerald Ford's swearing in as vice president, plans release of a detailed financial report to prove no personal gain from office. A White House task force prepared the material to rebut charges including alleged tax advantages and deduction for donating vice presidential papers.
An American Arbitration Association arbitrator directs Bennington School District to reinstate John Riddle after a nonrenewal last spring, marking a second BSD case deemed to lack just cause. The board disputes binding arbitration, arguing it is not part of the teacher contract or state law.
Rep. Gerald R. Ford was sworn in as the 40th vice president amid a tight 387 to 35 House vote and 92 to 3 Senate approval. He pledged loyalty to Nixon and to upholding the Constitution, while his family watched in the VIP gallery and the ceremony aired on national networks.
Mountain View California United Press International reports Pioneer 10 data reveal Jupiter radiates 2.5 times the energy it receives from the sun, with a deep seated vortex in the great Red Spot and variable temperatures. Io is denser and has a 65 mile deep atmosphere. Helium presence and a safe dust belt are noted. Pioneer heads toward outer planets as contact fades toward Uranus in 1979.
Rutland officials hear Public Safety Commissioner Edward W. Corcoran warn of heating shortages and urge Civil Defense to draft disaster plans. He cites federal oil controls and dealer responsibility while stressing Northeast fuel fairness and state involvement.
Rep. Brian Burns of South Burlington will introduce a bill to require legislative approval before planning or building any nuclear powered electric plant in Vermont. The measure demands a joint resolution detailing location cost generating capability and responsible financiers with penalties up to 10000 dollars or three years imprisonment. Griffin, head of Central Vermont Public Service Corp and Vermont Electric Power Co., said a second nuclear plant is likely. He forecast construction within two to three years on a new coal fired generator or an atomic facility. Johnson opposed nuclear power, citing safety concerns. Dr. Arthur Tamplin warned scientists worry about accidents and sabotage at atomic plants.
