HUD's Romney Urges More Housing Help for Poor
Washington based George Romney, housing secretary, argued the government has subsidized middle and upper income home purchases far more than housing for the poor. He urged public support for new programs to assist the disadvantaged, noting FHA and VA mortgage guarantees and tax deductions favor affluent homeowners. Romney criticized past policy for pushing low income families into urban cores while keeping middle income in suburbs and called for better, modern public housing for all.
