Union accepts pay cut to keep plant open at Geneva Can Co
Geneva New York union machinists voted to take a 25 cent an hour pay cut to avoid a 12 cent wage increase. The Geneva plant of American Can Co employs about 500 workers and is in Lodge 1838 of the International Association of Machinists. The cut will occur in two steps next year, the final year of a three year contract. The company warned the plant could close if the cut was refused, and another plant has already shut down this year with another facing possible closure.
