South African Doctor Performs World's First Heart Transplant
Cape Town, Dec 3. Dr Christian Barnard led a five hour operation in Groote Schuur Hospital delivering Denise Darvall’s heart to Louis Washkansky, a 55-year-old grocer. Officials said Washkansky is conscious and satisfactory, with officials noting the risk of rejection remains high and a long monitoring period lies ahead. The donor’s kidney also saved a young colored boy, Jonathan van Wyk, in a separate transplant.
