Hale Co. strike hits 120 Local 164 workers

EAST ARLINGTON One hundred twenty workers of Local 164 United Furniture Workers of America walked out Monday at Hale Co furniture manufacturers after contract expiration midnight Nov 30. Local President Lawrence Ott said two meetings with company officials yielded no settlement. He charged the firm wants to take away without giving. Company officials could not be reached for comment. Hale makes cabinets chairs and dinette sets.

Novice Flyer Steals Plane Then Dives Toward Ocean

An inexperienced private pilot seized a single engine plane, failed to land at Kennedy, steered toward the Atlantic as three Coast Guard planes chased him. The plane ran out of fuel and ditched in cold water fifty miles off the coast. a helicopter rescued the pilot.

Powell Granted Stay on Serving Jail Sentence

Powell granted an eight day stay on a 30 to 90 day jail term for evading a libel judgment against Esther James of Harlem. The Appellate Division kept the separate judgment for immediate jailing alive and set December 10 for a hearing on the appeal.
