First of 91 Paran Acres homes sold in Shaftsbury project

Paran Acres, a 91 acre subdivision off Lake Paran Road on the Shaftsbury North Bennington border, has sold eight lots to local contractors. Donald J. Dailey reports strong interest as the cluster development connects to North Bennington water. Homes start around 7,500 dollars with underground utilities and individual septic systems. Occupancy expected late winter or early spring, with several pre sold. The Act 250 permit limits 20 dwelling units per year. boundary questions may involve North Bennington and Shaftsbury school districts.

Snelling forms nuclear advisory unit

Gov. Richard Snelling creates the Nuclear Advisory Panel to inform the public and government on nuclear power issues in Vermont. The group, chaired by PSB head Richard Saudek, includes health and environmental agency leaders and two legislators, with staff support from within or outside state government.

Dukakis signs land-use tax act to protect farmland

Massachusetts Governor Michael S. Dukakis signed a 5 million dollar bond bill to help towns buy development rights for farms and curb sprawl. The law lets farmers sell development rights while maintaining agricultural use and paying lower property taxes. Dukakis called it first of its kind in the nation.

Waterbury State Hospital to Cut 10 Percent of Staff

State Mental Health Commissioner Richard Surles announced an 18 month plan to reduce 10 percent of the Waterbury hospital workforce, about 59 positions, through attrition with no firings. Of the 286 patient care jobs, 29 are slated for reduction and 48 support roles will be cut. About 375 patients remain at the facility as administrative positions are shifted toward direct care. Brandon Training School’s Raymond Mulcahy is reassigned as special assistant to the commissioner due to health issues after 28 years at Brandon.

Buckley daughter hired for state job sparks questions
