Retarded Children Learn and Grow at Red Brick School
Prof Lucien Hanks profiles the Red Brick School in South Shaftsbury and the Bennington Friends of Retarded Children drive for funds. Forty two children attend, many transferred from public schools after parents seek specialized help from nurses, counselors, and state psychologists, with cases sometimes referred to Brandon Training School. Winnie, a pupil, climbs from fear and difficulty to modest reading and spelling progress under teacher Miss Alice Miller, while staff emphasize patient, individualized pacing and pride in progress.
