Sirica orders Nixon to surrender tapes in high court fight
Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox won a key ruling as Judge John Sirica ordered President Nixon to allow private inspection of the Watergate tapes to determine whether they should be turned over to the grand jury. Nixon appealed, or could ignore the order, amid a broader clash over executive privilege and separation of powers.

Kennedy proposes sales tax cut faces cautious review
Gov. Thomas P. Salmon's tax adviser Norris Hoyt questions a 1 percent sales tax cut proposed by House Speaker Walter Kennedy. Hoyt doubts revenue losses of nearly $8 million can be afforded and urges focusing on property tax relief for open space lands. He notes the rebate provision moderates regressive effects and warns big business may benefit from a cut. The administration will study tax reform as part of broader property tax relief efforts.
