Apollo 17 Aims to Break Moon Mission Records
Apollo 17 astronauts plan to stay longer on the moon, cover more territory, and orbit more times than earlier crews. Commanded by Eugene Cernan with Harrison Schmitt, the crew will attempt a record 75 lunar orbits in 12 days, 16 hours, while carrying new scientific instruments and a longer two-hour lunar surface stay. They launch December 6 at 9:34 p.m. EST and aim to land December 11 through December 13, with the mission concluding December 19 in the Pacific Ocean.
