A group of Bennington merchants voiced broad approval Thursday evening of a 20 year plan for the central business district. The Greater Bennington Association Merchants Division heard praise with Alfred Hertz calling the recommendations terrific and others calling them very good.
A Titan 3D rocket carrying eight military communications satellites exploded 80 seconds after liftoff from Cape Kennedy, sending debris into the Atlantic. The Air Force cited an early self destruction of the vehicle and said the cause was not known. The event followed a successful Saturn 1 launch, and the Titan was to support the Manned Orbiting Laboratory program in coming years.
The Bennington Board of Civil Authority disqualified two members, Virginia N. Perrotta and James J. Sleeman, due to their own appeals on the 1966 reappraisal. Town Counsel Norton Barber cited Vermont law barring participation in appeals by those with such filings. Perrotta suggested broader disqualification of town selectmen over close working ties, as the three selectmen sit with the board during hearings.
Arthur Davis, sought for the New Haven five killings, was captured on the New Jersey Turnpike after a 44 mile pursuit that included police tire disablement and interchanges closed. He did not fire back. weapons found in his car. He faces arraignment in Washington Township as a Connecticut fugitive. The case ties to a wave of mass slayings this summer. Names of victims in New Haven and local witnesses are reported with cautions on the ongoing investigation.
In a tragic misstrike near Phu Loi north of Saigon a U S Army 1st Infantry Division battalion was hit by napalm from an Air Force F100 during close combat with Viet Cong. Over 20 American troops were killed or wounded as 47 enemy fighters fell and U S Marines repelled a separate Communist assault in Operation Prairie 350 miles north.

In Djibouti Somali land turmoil grows as African nationalists clash with French troops during Charles de Gaulle’s visit. One policeman killed and 20 injured as 2,000 protesters surround the rally. De Gaulle later tours the port and greets independence banners before heading to Ethiopia.
