The Bennington Opportunity Council reports a 20 percent rise in participants for its community garden project with about 120 families sharing work and harvests. Gardens span Manchester Arlington Pownal Center North Bennington and Bennington, totalling 545 tilled or seeded backyard plots funded by a federal emergency food grant.
In Seattle Jimmy Carter drew loud boos from more than 15,000 Legion members when he proposed a blanket pardon for Vietnam era draft resisters, while supporters cheered his plan. The clash marked a sour note on his West Coast campaign swing and he defended his position as part of a broader tour of political gain.
President Ford urged Carter to begin face to face debates within about two weeks and proposed four 90 minute debates.
