Vice President Spiro Agnew began a Far East tour with handshakes and a pledge to send 54 Phantom jets to South Korea to reassure fears over the withdrawal of 20,000 U.S. troops. He spoke in Seoul after a Guam stop, promising military aid to modernize Korea’s defense and reaffirm the mutual defense treaty. His itinerary includes Taiwan, South Vietnam, Thailand, and possibly Cambodia.
Two Hoosick Falls youths were killed and two Bennington teens remained in critical condition after a two car head-on crash on Route 67 near Hathaway's Drive-In in North Hoosick early Saturday. Arnold Wright and Steven Richard were among the injured. Ralph Metcalfe and Ronald Niles died in the crash. Gordon Elwell was in fair condition in Bennington. Investigators cited unsafe tires and a junior operator violation in the incident. Funeral services for the deceased are planned Tuesday.

The event also honors Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who held the 1848 Seneca Falls conference, and notes Lutz as Stanton and Anthony biographer.

An educational program for preschool retarded children in the Bennington area will be severely reduced this year as the Red Brick School in Shaftsbury operated by the Bennington Friends of Retarded Children loses its federal grant. Enrollment last year was about 20. next year the program may serve about seven with one teacher and possibly a teacher's aide. A sheltered workshop proposal exists but no community program currently absorbs the gap.
A bomb exploded at the University of Wisconsin Mathematics Research Center in Madison killing a 33 year old physics graduate assistant Robert Fassnacht and injuring four others including a security officer and a South Africa born graduate student. Federal authorities joined the probe as officials said the building housed a nuclear accelerator and had suffered prior vandalism related to antiwar protests. The blast occurred around 3 45 am and damaged surrounding buildings and a hospital patient suffered eye injuries from a shattered window.
