Protests at Seabrook Nuclear Site End With 179 Arrests

Nearly 180 demonstrators from the Clamshell Alliance occupied the Seabrook nuclear plant construction site in New Hampshire for about 90 minutes. State police arrested 179 on criminal trespass charges and held them overnight at the National Guard Armory in Portsmouth. The group faced possible criminal contempt over a court order, while supporters rallied nearby.

Congress Returns to Tackle Postal Service Crisis

In Washington, Congress resumes after the Republican convention to confront the Postal Service deficit of about 4.5 billion dollars and service cuts. UVM seeks larger state support with budget hike plan

The University of Vermont trustees approved a biennial budget asking for $13.6 million for 1978 and $16.2 million for 1979 in state funds. They cite rising costs and faculty raises while proposing higher tuition for out-of-state students and no increase for Vermonters. A plan to extend Vermont ETV broadcasting hours to 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. was approved, with requested appropriations rising to $683,000 next year and $717,000 the following year.

Scientists report 1976 as a deadly year for quakes and natural disasters with up to 30,000 quake deaths this year and 67,000 in Peru and Turkey in 1970. The USGS tallies include 23,000 in Guatemala Fed 4 900 in northeastern Italy May 6 and 3,750 in the Philippines last week.
