Washington UPI reports Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower showed heart action improvement at Walter Reed but doctors caution his status remains critical with a guarded outlook. He spent a restful night and has fewer irregular heartbeats though no near-term removal from the critical list is expected.
North Vietnamese regulars and Viet Cong attacked Da Nang and occupied Cam Le village south of the air base. Major fighting left 15 Marines killed and 49 wounded, with 81 enemy killed reported. a 24 hour curfew was imposed as government forces fought in Cam Le and Da Nang downtown.
Svoboda in Moscow as Czechs stop Prague for an hour in protest against the Soviet invasion. Reports say Cesimir Cisar escaped from captivity and hides. Dubcek remains in Russian internment. Svoboda meets Kosygin and Brezhnev while Prague quiets amid tensions and police activity.
Vermont federal judge Bernard Leddy ruled that the United States may keep 440 gold coins and a 1961 Chevrolet seized from Ronald Gerhard in a border smuggling case. The decision overruled his bid to recover the coins bought from Canada for 15 562, and denied suppression of evidence.
Washington reports that the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia unsettles NATO power balance and the number of U.S. troops to remain in Europe. It appears plans to withdraw many troops will be scrapped for now, as Senate leader Mike Mansfield had long urged reducing from 337,000 to 50,000 or more troops.
