Johnson Eyes Excise Tax Cut Ahead of 1965 Holidays
Washington sources say President Johnson will ask Congress to reduce excise taxes by 1 to 3 billion dollars for 1965 to spur Christmas shopping. A October 1, 1965 deadline would prevent preholiday shopping delays, with retail levies on jewelry furs cosmetics luggage and handbags and select manufacturing excises in scope. Treasury officials point to last March's 11.5 billion tax cut and fear or hope Congress will act rather than risk messier outcomes.
