Champlain farmers battle drought in Vermont

Vermont farmers in the Champlain Valley face a prolonged drought while state and federal agencies sort flood disaster claims from 1973. Auditor Alexander Acebo said about 200 of 220 municipal claims totaling around 13 million dollars in federal aid have been processed or are awaiting approval. Four largest claims worth a combined million dollars remain unsettled. Acebo expects final processing within one to two months. He faults federal red tape and argues a regional FDA director’s strict guidelines hurt Vermont towns. Vermont officials plan a drought tour with Gov. Salmon to Franklin County to assess aid eligibility and possible natural disaster designations that would unlock Farmers Home Administration loans.

Coordinator Bernard Bisson will present the K to 12 plan to seven boards for district adoption. An Employe Assistance Program aims to help workers overcome alcohol problems without job loss. The effort has broad backing from educators and the DES, with goals to unify the region’s alcohol education.
