The Bennington School District board and State Director of Special Education Jean S. Garvin criticize final cost figures for the Molly Stark School special education wing. An estimated 428612 addition faces scrutiny over funding method and architects fees, despite 75 percent state aid.
The Catamount board named Louis Axt 31 of North Adams Mass as principal of Catamount Brookside Elementary. Axt, a four year Drury High School science teacher, is a Navy veteran and former acting science chair. He replaces Charles Decker who left for Barre. The meeting also approved a low bid of 3679 dollars from Thurber's Garage for a GMC truck to replace the Jeep Gladiator, with other bids listed. Board discussions covered parochial aid funding with Sacred Heart and potential district vote in October under H 103, detailing private school salaries and materials reimbursements up to 50 percent.
The board announced opening dates with teachers reporting Sept 2 for new staff and Sept 3 for other teachers, while students begin Sept 7. They discussed building accessibility costs, including ramp and bathroom facilities, and a $38,512 architect fee. The state would fund $223,366 of a $428,612 project, with the district covering the balance. A hotline at 604 Main St. was offered for parental questions.

Vermont official Elbert Al Moulton met with Winhall selectmen as they denied a permit for Elmer Argast to develop 24 acres on Stratton Mountain into a 250 unit convention center. Moulton warned of a weak summer tourism season while noting Vermont’s aging resorts and need to adapt ski areas for off season business. He said the decision on the project rests with local authorities.
Gov Davis will not alter the fiscal 1973 budget until welfare program impacts are shown. Human Services Secretary Cowles requests 3.4 million more than the proposed 39.6 million general fund allocation to maintain current levels, with potential cuts to ANFC or 100 percent funding. Cowles must set agency priorities and present evidence to Davis. no broad tax hike is planned.
In Damascus UPI reports leaders of Egypt Libya and Syria agreed to sign a constitution Friday to form a federation named the Federation of Arab Republics. President Sadat plans a Saudi visit, with debates over regional crises and unity continuing among leaders at the Damascus Guest Palace.
A 50 state UPI survey of 66 state political leaders finds most see the economy as the top issue for Americans, with inflation unemployment and rising living costs, while dissent over Vietnam withdrawal pace and concerns about crime budgets and taxes persist.
