Eisenhower's Condition Critical Amid Heart Flutters and Pacemaker Failure

Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower remained in extremely critical condition at Walter Reed Hospital after numerous episodes of ventricular irregularity. An electrical pacemaker was removed as ineffective, though doctors stated he retains mental faculties and a small breakfast was eaten. Family members and Mamie Eisenhower stayed nearby as physicians monitor ongoing heart rhythm issues and treatments.

Sniper Held in Killing of LIRR Train Passenger

New York UPI reports 16 year old John Whitmore held without bail for the sniper killing of Vincent Maher 31 and wounding Gabriel Jensen ? on a Manhattan bound LIRR train in Queens. Whitmore admitted firing on a whim from an embankment with a sawed off .30-06 rifle. Maher died, Jensen injured but in good condition. Whitmore arrested near Sunnyside yard after rifle found near railroad ties.

Allied Troops Smash Massive Cong Offensive

U S and South Vietnamese forces repelled the largest Communist summer assault near Tay Ninh, killing over 500 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese, with thousands more driven toward the Cambodian border. The fighting disrupted streets, caused civilian casualties, and spurred a retreat as U.S. tanks gunships and air support battered the Communist columns.
