Cloudy and warmer with chances of scattered showers toward midnight. Lows in the 60s. Tuesday partly clear, warm and humid with possible afternoon thundershowers. Yesterday’s high around 70, low about 40. Today 7 am temperature 52. Sunset 7 50, sunrise 6 01.
Israeli riot police sealed off Jerusalem broad Arab quarter as three explosions injure nine and two more devices are found. Mob violence follows with over 50 cars burned and 20 Israelis arrested. Police warn residents. two Arab residents beaten. Jordanian-Israeli line exchange also reports mortars and gunfire with no casualties.
Bennington Post 13 Le gion baseball meets Hartford in the state tournament final after surviving a double elimination that began Friday in Barre. Bennington has played four games, winning three and losing to Hartford, who they face again at 11 a.m. today. The team stayed in Barre overnight. score not yet available at presstime.
In Chicago and Washington, Humphrey and McCarthy camps clash over platform planks and seating contests as the Democratic race pivots on Vietnam policy and delegate credentials. McCarthy backers push to upset Humphrey’s lead, while McGovern and Maddox lag as fringe contenders.
Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower remained in extremely critical condition at Walter Reed Hospital after numerous episodes of ventricular irregularity. An electrical pacemaker was removed as ineffective, though doctors stated he retains mental faculties and a small breakfast was eaten. Family members and Mamie Eisenhower stayed nearby as physicians monitor ongoing heart rhythm issues and treatments.
New York UPI reports 16 year old John Whitmore held without bail for the sniper killing of Vincent Maher 31 and wounding Gabriel Jensen ? on a Manhattan bound LIRR train in Queens. Whitmore admitted firing on a whim from an embankment with a sawed off .30-06 rifle. Maher died, Jensen injured but in good condition. Whitmore arrested near Sunnyside yard after rifle found near railroad ties.
U S and South Vietnamese forces repelled the largest Communist summer assault near Tay Ninh, killing over 500 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese, with thousands more driven toward the Cambodian border. The fighting disrupted streets, caused civilian casualties, and spurred a retreat as U.S. tanks gunships and air support battered the Communist columns.
Prague reports Dubcek concentrates on preserving control of reform government as Soviet allies warn of counterrevolutionary forces. The regime pressures editors to curb criticism and to rally support for the Sept. 9 Communist Party Congress while public rallies and petitions test the limit on free speech in Prague.
