POWs fear U.S. makes mail difficult for families

Anti Iran POWs interviewed by Rumsey Clack told Clark they fear the U.S. government is hindering mail to and from their families. They reported good medical care, regular workouts, and ongoing reading, with fears of retaliation post repatriation. They urged relatives to use COLFAM for mail.

U S intensifies its bombing raids over North Vietnam

U S war planes carried the heaviest bombing missions of the renewed air war against North Vietnam with 370 jet fighter-bomber raids and eight SAC B52 missions hitting targets including a radar site near Hanoi. Sudden coastal storm claims three lives off Oregon shore

A sudden 75 mph windstorm along the Northern California Oregon coast sank boats and toppled power lines. Three people died and others were missing as Coast Guard cutters and aircraft searched the sea. Dooley and Virginia Friend perished and members of their families were later identified. Rescue crews saved several aboard a swamped vessel while beaches suffered widespread damage.

Fischer charges rejected by FIDE officials in chess match

In Reykjavik FIDE president Max Euwe told arbiter Lothar Schmid he rejected Fischer’s complaints of arrogance and incompetence. Schmid said Euwe received a cable from Fred Cramer protesting Schmid’s conduct. The Spassky Fischer 250000 dollar match's 11th game was set for this afternoon with Spassky leading 8 1/2 to 5 1/2 and needing four points to win. Cramer noted efforts to curb noise and improve playing conditions.
