Bennington delays downtown trees until spring
Bennington will not plant its first downtown sidewalk trees until next spring to protect young specimens from winter damage. The ad hoc tree-planting committee, chaired by Charles Tilgner, set bids day as the deadline and plans for 50 to 60 trees on East Main Street using lindens and flowering crabs. Bid invitations target prices for 2% and 3 inch trees, with guarantees of full leaf out by spring 1973 and initial town watering responsibilities. The committee will evaluate bids, select a nursery, and begin fundraising with pledges already totaling $300 from the Garden Club and several merchants.
