Cree Opposes St John Power Project and Favors Private Utilities
Rutland’s Albert A. Cree, chairman of the Electric Coordinating Council of New England, told a House subcommittee that the federal Dickey Lincoln School hydro project on the St John River should not be built. He argued private utilities can meet peak and base-load needs cheaper with pumped storage hydro and nuclear plants closer to load centers, citing Yankee Atomic at Rowe, Connecticut Yankee at Haddam, and Millstone Point, plus a proposed pumped storage at Northfield Mountain and a Vermont unit by CVPS and Green Mountain. He said these developments would lower costs and taxes while delivering reliable power for New England.
