SVSU Wins Title I Funds Amid Watergate Shadow
Superintendent George Sleeman announced that Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union will receive 345,000 in Title I funds from the federal government. The grant preserves 21 jobs and supports remedial reading and math, speech help, and the four‑year Curriculum Workshop led by William Steel and Jeanne McWaters at Molly Stark School. The money allows the 160‑day program to begin after September and end before summer. Sleeman notes Watergate era politics aided Bennington’s early access to funds as Title II was dropped and Title I extended automatically, with state officials in Montpelier confirming the award.

Town faces tax bill delays over budget and billing split
Selectmen fear continued appeal delays from the BCA could push tax bills beyond August, risking November cash flow. The BSD school budget faces rejection at a special meeting August 2, prompting a plan for separate billing using the school district to handle its share. Two sets of bills would be costly, potentially about $2,000, and the town might struggle to pay tax anticipation notes.

PSB weighs stay on clause in power contracts
The PSB says refunds to electric customers could be made if courts overturn the clause, while keeping it could mean customers bear the difference if stayed. Public hearings may be held on sites Hayes proposed, including purchase power contracts with the New York Power Authority and cross state sales. Chairman Gilbert argues the clause saves money and reduces rate cases, while opponents say it unlawfully shifts PSB rulemaking power from the legislature.

Increased costs blamed for diminished earnings
Central Vermont Public Service Corp of Rutland reports poorer earnings for the first half of the year with common share earnings at 1 cent versus 88 cents last year. For the year ending June 30, per share earnings fell to 95 cents from 1.78. President James Griffin pins the drop on higher purchased power costs from Vermont Yankee Nuclear Plant under 75 percent capacity. He cites a purchased power clause starting this week and warns customers will see a 16 percent bill rise this month to cover higher power costs.
