Most U S priests oppose edict on birth control study shows

A study of 5,000 active priests 800 former priests and 250 bishops finds two thirds oppose Pope Paul VI 1967 encyclical against artificial birth control with many calling it ill timed or an abuse of authority while only 40 percent of diocesan priests and 42 percent of religious order priests support the churchs position on divorce. The project by the National Opinion Research Center directed by Rev. Andrew Greeley notes gaps in data on priestly identity and performance and an official evaluation by Everett Hughes team largely upholds quality of the report but calls for broader data.
