Former Vermont governor Philip Hoff said he will not respond to questions raised by senatorial primary opponent William H. Meyer. Meyer earlier threatened to withdraw for Hoff over policy positions while launching a list of allegations Hoff dismissed as unsubstantiated and insufficient for charges.
President Nixon and top advisers travel to New Orleans to discuss desegregation speed and scope with leaders from Alabama Arkansas Louisiana Georgia Mississippi and the Carolinas. Mitchell Richardson and Finch outline policy and hear local issues while editors are briefed.
The Army postponed Lt. William L. Calley Jr.'s August 24 court martial at Fort Benning to allow defense motions for disclosure of documents related to the My Lai massacre. No new date set. first hearing scheduled for August 24. Calley, 27, of Miami, and others seek federal court transfer.
Congress passed legislation granting President Nixon authority to impose wage price and rent controls. Nixon says he will not use it. The measure passed the House 216 to 153. The article also references the My Lai massacre and the delayed life or death trial of Calley.
