Canning lid allotment urged by USDA officials
USDA consumer affairs adviser Nancy Stearts urged state agriculture chiefs to work with distributors and retailers to allocate canning lids by state. About 534 million lids are slated for shipment June through year end, enough for roughly 5.3 million average families. Allocations would be voluntary and aim to get lids to those who need them amid ongoing shortages. Texas reports underground water depletion threatens agriculture, with irrigation supporting 8.3 million acres and 1973 production estimated at $1.83 billion.
