The East Dorset Congregational Church barbecue last Saturday cleared 128 dollars from the barbecue and 36 dollars from the auction, with proceeds expected to rise further from sale tables. Co chairs Mrs Sherman Hitchcock and Mrs Donald Johnson credited a pleasant evening, helpful committee, and tasty food for the success.
Southern Vermont Art Center in Manchester presents two events this weekend. On Saturday at 8:30 the Beers Family will perform traditional folk songs and instruments from six generations of Americans. Sunday at 3:30 Marilyn Costello will give a harp recital with the Philadelphia Orchestra, notable for Mozart Flute and Harp Concerto in London. Admission covers both events and Art Gallery access one hour before each performance.
Poultney United Farmers dairy cooperative members will gather in the Rutland County district on August 17 at the Valley Club Poultney. Supper at 6 30 p m opens the session with Best Milk Quality Awards and year end reports for the period ending June 30. District director and delegate elections, door prizes, and notices of August September meetings across 15 districts in Maine New Hampshire New York and Vermont.
Nikos Psacharopoulos restages Saint Joan at Williamstown with grand scale and vivid design. Joyce Ebert as Joan receives critique for lack of earthy portrayal, while Austin Pendleton, Lee Wallace, and others deliver strong performances. Sets, costumes, and lighting by Conklin and Hunt impress. Shaw’s themes remain timely, though the lead falters slightly.
The CPCC summer school at Pownal Center School awarded achievement certificates in several subjects. Students in Math Exploring Number Systems for grades 4 5 6. The Story of Graphs for grades 4 5 6. and Children's Literature Enrichment for grades 1 2 3 were honored. The Most Deserving trophy went to the Pownal Fire Department Auxiliary at the Vermont State Firefighters Convention in Barre.
Mrs Ralph Bishop, president of the state auxiliary and past president of the local unit, received the annual award for contributions to the state auxiliary treasury during the past year and also received a parade participation trophy.
Hoosick Falls notes report visits by Mr and Mrs Clifford Grover of Rocky Hill Conn and many local club activities. Arlington and Manchester Garden Clubs plan joint meeting August 17 in Manchester Center with decorations talk. Arlington High Alumni meet tonight at 8 at the firehouse. Local residents attend camps and conferences in Burlington and Hot Springs. The Flying Farmers group and family travel, Expo trip planned by Cambridge Garden Club. Five local women depart for a two day Expo bus trip.
The Yankee Doodlers will form at 10 a.m. Sunday in the kindergarten rooms and march from Bennington to participate in the Bennington Battle Day parade. Eleanor Niles reports the Maurice Taber family spent Sunday in Oneonta with Mrs. Maud Barber visiting Mrs. Susan Cook over the weekend.
Dorset Village Public Library expands beyond reading with an exhibit titled Vermontiana through September. Paul Stevenson curates Vermont themed books in an antique heart-shaped display with deer horns, roses, an open Bible, steel rim spectacles, and a kerosene lamp. The collection features local histories, maps, and bios of Horace Greeley Joseph Smith Ira Allen and Robert Frost letters. Upstairs a memorial watercolour display by late resident Robert McIntyre reflects the Dorset landscape and ties to the Ash Can School.
