Nuke pledges action to avoid more spills

Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corp. pledges corrective action to prevent a recurrence of the 83,000 gallon radioactive water spill into the Connecticut River. A final report to the NRTC cites inadequate procedures and possible equipment failure. The spill, slightly above federal and state limits, posed no risk to health or environment. Wright faces bottle law charge against Rutland firm

In Bennington a Rutland beverage distributor Farrell Distributing Corp Center Rutland is charged with violating Vermont s returnable bottle law for refusing to collect empties not in cardboard shells. The center operator Ralph Wright says shells are scarce and that distributors must take bottles and cans. The citation by State's Attorney Raymond G Bolton could carry a fine up to 1000 dollars.
