Hoff chides Emergency Board over student aid funds
Gov Philip Hoff criticized the Republican controlled Emergency Board for denying a supplemental $106,000 request from the Vermont Student Assistance Corp to fund 225 incentive scholarships for Vermonters planning to attend college this fall. The board noted prior spending of $870,000 for the biennium and late applications. Hoff refused to call a special session to approve the money, saying people’s needs outweigh technicalities. A separate note: Republican candidate Richard C. Thomas proposed moving Vermont primaries to June to boost party unity and end straight-ticket voting. Also, FAA funding for Lyndonville airport rises to $289,000 with federal share at $144,500.
