Sharp jump in wholesale food prices in July

Wholesale food prices rose sharply in July with the index up 0.4 percent. Farm product prices jumped 3.2 percent the largest monthly gain in 17 years, lifting overall wholesale prices 4.5 percent higher than a year ago. Unemployment held at 5.5 percent.

Annual Elks pilgrimage this Sunday

The Benalilan Lodge of Elks plans a Sunday event led by Rene Dubois and Virginio Perrotta with John B. Harte coordinating Vermont Elks activities. Delegates from 13 lodges, a camp tour, and a $1,000 gift to Barre mayor Wilfred Fisher are featured, followed by a state park picnic.

Burlington Alderman Opposes Local Prison Site

Burlington Alderman M. Robert Blanchard voiced strong opposition to state plans to buy five acres from St Anthonys Parish for a 2.4 million correctional facility in the south end. He called the site residential and near the proposed Burlington tell line route, promising to push for zoning board review if sold. Parish representative Neail Bean called the meeting informational, with parish council to decide later this month.

Urge Davis to reconsider Rose for CEO

The Vermont Welfare Rights Organization urges Gov. Deane to reconsider Stephen Rose for director of the Office of Economic Opportunity. Rose, recommended by Willian Cowles Jr., was rejected for political reasons due to his Vermont Legal Aid ties. The group says Rose is best qualified and warns of potential loss of antipoverty funds if not appointed soon.

Reunion Picnic Set for Sterry Hewitt Ramady Nannah

The 36th annual picnic reunion will be held Saturday Aug. 12 at 1 PM at Shields Pavilion on the north end of Hedges Lake in Cambridge. Guests bring covered dishes. table service beverages and swimming provided by management. A short business meeting will follow dinner.

VEW Notes Auxiliary Meeting and Battle Day Open House

VEW Post 4332 notes a regular meeting on Tuesday August 8 at 8 pm. Open house runs all next weekend for Battle Day celebrations. A steak supper is planned Saturday August 12 from 6 to 8 pm with dancing by Mike Devenow and his band. Junior picks sell puppies next weekend to raise funds for veterans and their families. Past president Margaret Knights has been hospitalized as the auxiliary sends a speedy recovery.

Fischer's 10th win puts Spassky in trouble in Reykjavik

In Reykjavik Iceland Bobby Fischer defeated Boris Spassky in the 11th move of the 11th game to extend his lead to 5.3 to 3.5 as he moves closer to the world championship. Analysts note Fischer needs six more victories or 12 draws to clinch the title while Spassky would have to reverse the deficit.

Ribicoff wed in private ceremony in Washington

UPI reports Senator Abraham Ribicoff and Mrs Lois Mathes of Miami Beach were married in a private ceremony at Adas Israel Synagogue in Washington. Ribicoff, 62, and the divorcee Mathes, mother of two, will reside in Hartford and Washington.

Bennington County Choral Society Plans Expanded 1972-73 Season

The Bennington County Choral Society groups rehearsals starting Aug 7 at Saint Joseph College auditorium Bennington with fall plans to perform Monteverdi Magnificat and Brahms Requiem in November. Rehearsals move to Mt Anthony Union High School from September 1 as in prior years. The society seeks new members from Bennington County and nearby New York and Massachusetts communities, with about 72 current singers and a call for more men.

Rotary backs Bennington Community Center drive

Rotary Club of Bennington approves support for the $100,000 Community Center fund drive at Memorial Park. President Gerald Butler announced the board backing and directed a local fundraising push led by Robert Harrington to reach the September 25 goal, inviting other groups to join.

ABC saves Cavett show from doom

In New York ABC announced Dick Cavett will appear every fourth week in 1973 alternating with Jack Paar and other programs. His 11:30 pm to 1 am slot remains five nights weekly until year end, then Cavett and Paar rotate one week out of four with dramas and variety shows filling the other weeks. Martin Starger said cancellation would have followed if ratings did not improve by July 28. Cavett won an Emmy this year but trails Carson and a CBS late night movie. ABC officials note ratings have inched up recently.

Highway Department hearing in Pownal

Verminant Highway Department schedules a public meeting at Pownal Fire Station on Monday August 7 at 2 30 pm. Commissioner John T Gray and state Highway Board members will attend along with Bennington county legislators. Residents invited to offer suggestions as talks include a rumored north south interstate route through Pownal connecting to Rt 9 and a Massachusetts line.
