U S government reports virtually finishing its drive to bar thalidomide from pregnant women. FDA has interviewed most of the 1 231 physicians who received drug samples for experimental use. 67 doctors held supplies and those were destroyed or impounded.
Attorney General Robert F Kennedy defended the proposed 50-50 public private ownership model for a global satellite network. He said the bill protects government and public interests despite Senate opposition and warned against rushing the measure while top witnesses are abroad. Minow backed the plan as a constructive path into space communications.
Manila president orders deportation of American billionaire Harry Stonehill and associate Robert Brooks as undesirable aliens. The House custody dispute blocks immediate action as Stonehill faces contempt for payroll listings of about 100 government staff. The sergeant at arms resists surrender, while the Deportation Board cites security concerns. State Dept says Stonehill may freely enter the United States.
In London El Al refused a British order to transport Dr. Robert A. Soblen to the United States on a bombshell legal standoff. Soblen, a 61 year old psychiatrist and wartime Soviet spy fugitive, dodges deportation as attorneys pursue further court challenges amid international political tension.
Ahmed Ben Bella arrived from Oran to a roaring crowd of about 20 000 on Algiers waterfront as flags waved and rifles fired in salute. Despite Ben Khedda's regime officials present, Ben Bella vowed Marxist reforms and took guiding hand of a new seven member Political Bureau amid armed demonstrations and police strain.
An explosion on the western edge of Kansas City rooted from a major gas supply main tore up Wyoming Street between 46th and 47th. Five to nine homes were reported destroyed with flames visible in surrounding properties. Photographers on scene and in the air described extensive damage and shattered windows within blocks of the blast.
A four member investigatory committee led by Village President James B. Gibney invited engineering and health experts to Bennington to aid in examining complaints against Vermont Gas Corp. The exact number of experts and their names were not disclosed and they are expected to report Monday. The findings will be discussed at the trustees meeting Tuesday.
Shirley Duprea of Bennington says she misplaced her door to door fundraising permit for Berlin explosion fire victims. She appeals for return of the permit bearing Gibney's signature to Peter's Ice Cream Shop or her home. She has raised 418 dollars for the 25 plus residents who lost homes in the July 25 disaster.
Ray Jones of near Elk Falls found a nest with four tiny mocking birds wedged between his tractor radiator and fan. He left the tractor idle to attend to guests.
Mrs. Lucy Cummings, 67, of Sherbrooke Quebec, died in Newport Vermont after a Thursday night automobile crash on Route 14 in Irasburg. Police said she suffered a fractured skull and was hospitalized. four others in the car had minor injuries and were released after treatment.
Vermont Governor Keyser said he will ask the special session to adjourn if a reapportionment bill is not enacted by Wednesday and that the issue would go to federal courts. He blamed partisan politics for the 10 day deadlock as conflict over adding a Chittenden County seat.
Sen. Asa S. Bloomer urged sending the reapportionment dispute back to the Supreme Court after the House debate, proposing Chittenden County gain two seats at Rutland’s expense. The Senate, adjourning without a resolution, sent the House compromise reapportionment to committee, likely doomed.
Vermont House votes 151 to 73 to study possible restoration of operations on the strikebound Rutland Railway. A five thousand dollar study appropriation would report findings to the 1963 Legislature, based on a compromise from Rep. John Masterton and Rep. Philip Hoff.
