Montreal Olympic defections shake Cold War tensions
Eastern Bloc defections at the Montreal Games were few but had broad impact. Sergei Nemtsanov, a 17 year old Soviet diver, vanished amid claims of kidnaping and brainwashing, prompting Soviet warnings that sport ties with Canada could end. Canadian officials rejected the accusations while Nemtsanov's coach described alarming signs but immigration officials noted he appeared healthy. Romanian defections drew little attention.
